Uses: Ammonium Chloride is used in textile printing, in plywood glue, in solder as flux or in cleaning the tip of a soldering iron and in cleaning products. In foods it is used as a feed supplement for cattle and as a nutritive media for yeast. In certain countries sal ammoniac is used to flavor vodka and to spice up liquorice type of dark candies. Ammonium chloride may cause vomiting and nausea as it is irritating to the gastric mucosa. In cosmetics it is used in hair shampoo and in medications it is used in cough medication due to its expectorant action. This is the result of its irritating action on the bronchial mucosa. As excess respiratory tract fluid is produced the mucous is easier to cough up. Ammonium Chloride is also used to diagnose distal renal tubular acidosis through an oral acid loading test. Ammonium chloride has also been used as a flux in tin coating and galvanizing, in fertilizers, in dying and tanning and in safety explosions.
Ammonium chloride is used in biological applications as a source of energy for microbiological growth of organisms.

Natural: Ammonium Chloride is naturally occurring in volcanic regions. It forms near fume releasing vents on volcanic rocks. The crystals are deposited directly from the gaseous state and because they dissolve easily in water they tend to be short-lived. Ammonium Chloride is commercially prepared by reacting ammonia with hydrogen chloride. Due to the corrosive quality of these chemicals this preparation process is performed in vessels that are lined with non-reactive materials.
