Synonyms: Orthoboric acid, boracic acid or Acidum Boricum.
Uses: Boric Acid is often used as an antiseptic, flame retardant and an insecticide. In cosmetics it is often added to lotions, creams, bath and hair products. It can be used to help prevent athlete’s foot by adding it in socks or stockings and can be used in a solution to treat some types of ear infection, in humans and animals. It is also used for eye infections, flea infestations, as an ear drop to prevent fungal ear infections in swimmers, as a mild antiseptic in wounds and can help treat yeast infections.
As an insecticide it works by acting as a stomach poison and detrimentally affecting the metabolism of the insect. It is also an abrasive to the exoskeleton of the insect. In power plants it is used to control the fission rate of uranium. It is able to destroy wet and dry rot in wooden timbers and can be used with an ethylene glycol carrier to create a treatment for wood, protecting it from insect and fungal attack. It has been used since Ancient Greece for food preservation and cleaning. Boric acid is used with salt to cure cattle hides, sheep skins and calf skins, controlling the development of bacteria as well as prevent insect infestation. It is water soluble.
Recipe/Process: Herbal Astringent for Oily Skin
Ingredients:
- 1 ounce Chamomile
- 1 ounce Peppermint extract
- 3 tbsps Witch Hazel
- 8 ounces water
- ¼ tsp Boric Acid (optional)
Boil the witch hazel, chamomile, peppermint, vinegar and water. Allow the solution to cool and then strain it. Add in the rest of the ingredients in a spray bottle and shake vigorously. Keep astringent refrigerated.

Natural: Boric Acid is derived mainly from the borate mineral’s reaction with sulfuric acid. The largest source for borates is in Turkey in the Eti Mine Works.
Shelf Life: It is indefinite as long as it is stored properly in sealed container. Boric Acid does not decompose or break down.
Storage Directions: Keep in a tightly closed container and store in a cool, dry location that is well ventilated. Store away from incompatible substances.
Cautions: Is toxic if inhaled or ingested. May irritate eyes, skin, respiratory tract and digestive tract. May affect the central nervous system and may adversely affect the reproductive system. Use in a well ventilated area. Avoid breathing the dust in. Avoid any contact with the skin, eyes or clothing. Long term exposure on dogs resulted in them developing testicular atrophy.
