Botanical Name: Citrus aurantium
Plant Description: The Bitter Orange Tree is an evergreen with glossy dark green leaves and fragrant white flowers. It is capable of growing up to 10 m high. It is native to Northeastern India and southern China. Though the Bitter Orange and the edible Orange are similar to each other in appearance, the stalks on the leaves show a notable difference with the Bitter Orange being much broader and in the shape of the heart.

Aromatic Fragrance: Medium. It has an intensely sweet citrus scent that is characteristic of sweet orange. It also carries some bitterness that is characteristic of grapefruit.
Common Applications: The Bitter Orange is an antiseptic, cordial, antidepressant, antispasmodic, carminative, deodorant, stimulant (nervous), digestive, and tonic (cardiac, circulatory). It can be used as the oil of turpentine is used in chronic bronchitis. It does not irritate the kidneys. It can also be used to fight colds, flatulence, dull skin, constipation, stress and slow digestion.
History: There is some debate but it is believed the Arabs introduced Bitter Orange and Sweet Orange to Europe in the 1st century.
Storage Directions: Bitter Orange Essential Oil should be stored in a cool dry place out of direct sunlight. Essential Oils should be stored in colored glass, the most common storage method being used today are Boston Round Bottles in the amber tint.
Blends Well With: Bitter Orange blends well with all types of lavender, myrrh, lemon, clary sage and spicy oils such as clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Cautions: It is a non-irritant, generally non-toxic and non-sensitizing. For external use only.
