Uses: It is used as a preservative, a disinfectant and an antioxidant agent. In cosmetics Sodium Metabisulfite is used in hair dyes, bath products, permanent waves, hair bleaches, colors and tints and in skin care products. In these products Sodium Metabisulfite donate hydrogen molecules to other chemicals in the personal care product and these other ingredients are able to modify or change the structure of the hair fiber. Sodium Metabisulfite is also able to function as an antioxidant as it can slow down the deterioration of the cosmetic formulation which is caused by chemical reactions between the product and oxygen.

As a cleaning agent it is used to sanitize equipment in home brewing preparations. It can also be used to clean potable water reverse osmosis membranes in desalination systems. It is used as well to remove chloramine from drinking water after the water has been treated.

In textiles Sodium Metabisulfite is used in leather processing, gas purification, pulp processing and in bleaching mechanical paper pulp, wool, kaolin clay and cotton.

In medicine Sodium Metabisulfite can be used to test for sickle cell anaemia and other forms of haemolglobin mutation. This occurs as Sodium Metabisulfite is added to a blood smear. It causes the defunct cells to sickle. This process occurs through a complex polymerization and will confirm disease.
