Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate

Provides excellent foaming and viscosity response. Can be used in bath bombs as well, will help to create a bubble bather when the citric-bicarbonate reaction occurs. Hard water stable and milder then some other sulfates.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate, commonly abbreviated as SLSa, is a versatile and highly sought-after ingredient in the world of personal care and cosmetics. While it shares a name that's similar to the more recognized Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), it's essential to note that the two are distinctly different in terms of structure and functionality. SLSa has earned its reputation for being a milder, safer, and more skin-friendly alternative to traditional sulfates, a quality that renders it particularly suitable for a broad spectrum of personal care products.

Chemical Nature and Properties

SLSa is a fine white powder derived from coconut and palm oils. It's an anionic surfactant, which means it effectively breaks down surface tension in liquids, allowing better interaction between the product and the user's skin or hair. What sets SLSa apart from other similar ingredients is its larger molecular structure, which prevents it from penetrating the epidermis. This quality significantly reduces the potential for skin irritation, making it a top choice for those with sensitive skin.

Personal Care Applications

  • Bath Bombs and Bath Salts: SLSa is a favorite for formulators of bath bombs and salts. It aids in creating a luxuriant, foamy lather without overly drying the skin. The gentle effervescence and bubbles it induces elevate the bath experience, rendering a spa-like feel.
  • Shower Gels and Body Wash: Given its excellent foaming capacity, SLSa is a common inclusion in shower gels and body wash formulations. It ensures a rich lather while maintaining the skin's natural moisture barrier.
  • Shampoos: In hair care, SLSa offers gentle cleansing without stripping the hair of its natural oils. It's especially favored in shampoos for dyed or treated hair, ensuring color longevity and overall hair health.
  • Facial Cleansers: For facial products, the mild nature of SLSa makes it a desirable ingredient. It cleanses away impurities without causing tightness or over-drying the skin.

Soap Making and Cosmetic Formulations

For crafters and artisans who dabble in soap making and cosmetics, SLSa offers myriad benefits:

  • Enhanced Lather: One of the foremost reasons soap makers love SLSa is its ability to produce a creamy and dense lather, enhancing the tactile experience of using the soap.
  • Mildness: Handmade soaps with SLSa are less irritating, catering to users with sensitive or dry skin. This mildness extends to other cosmetics like facial bars and shaving creams.
  • Stabilizer: In liquid formulations, SLSa acts as a stabilizer, ensuring that the product remains consistent in texture and efficacy over time.
  • Enhanced Solubility: SLSa is known for its solubility in water, making it a convenient ingredient for formulators. Its solubility ensures an even distribution throughout the product, guaranteeing consistent performance.

Sustainability and Safety

With increasing awareness about clean beauty and sustainability, ingredients like SLSa are gaining traction. Its derivation from renewable plant sources like coconut and palm oils means that it aligns with the principles of green and sustainable beauty. Moreover, as a biodegradable compound, it doesn't accumulate in the environment, making it eco-friendly.

For users concerned about product safety, SLSa has been evaluated by various scientific and health bodies and deemed safe for topical applications. Its low potential for skin irritation and its non-penetrative nature further enhance its safety profile.

This is a wonderful alternative to harsh sulfate in many products.
This is a MUST HAVE in and soap/cosmetic makers studio! We simply cannot live without it! Makes lots of bubbles! We love it in our facial scrubs!
This stuff works really great makes lots of bubbles. It will tickle your throat. Make sure you wear a mask when using.
As another reviewer stated wear a mask. this stuff becomes air borne as soon as you open the jar. It works wonderfully in my foaming sugar scrubs since it is a powder I don't have to keep adding more sugar to offset any liquid foaming surfacant.
I definently recommend that you wear a mask when using this product.
