Synonyms: Pearl Ash, Potash, monopotassium salt; Potassium hydrogen carbonate, Dipotassium carbonate, Salt of tartar, Carbonate of potash, Dipotassium salt and Salt of wormwood, Potassium acid carbonate; Carbonic acid,
Uses: Potassium Carbonate is used in the production of glass, soap and china. It is used in laboratories as a mild drying agent when other drying agents like calcium chloride may be considered incompatible. It is not, however, suitable for acidic compounds. Added to hard water Pearl Ash softens water. Mixed with water it can also cause an exothermic reaction. This will produce an exothermic reaction that will produce heat. In cold fusion experiments, Potassium Carbonate can be used as an electrolyte. In producing wine or mead it is used sometimes as a buffering agent. It is also added to powder fire extinguishers where it acts as a reagent, as leavening in baking and as a powerful buffer in medications. It is soluble in water and insoluble in alcohol.
Natural: Potassium Carbonate is commercially created through the electrolysis of potassium chloride. This produces potassium hydroxide which is then carbonated using carbon dioxide. This forms potassium carbonate and this is often used to create other potassium compounds. It is considered to be a deliquescent as it usually appears as a wet or damp solid.
