Where our pure unrefined Cocoa Butter comes from

Our Cocoa Butter is created from the fruit of Theobroma Cacao (the Cocao tree), it is a natural fat that is extracted from the Cacao bean from this tree. Some call it "Oil of Theobroma", most know it has Cocoa Butter. The trees that produce the high-quality fruits used in our butter grow in the mountain regions of Togo.

The butter is extracted from the seed kernels and yields a tan colored butter with pleasant cocoa (chocolate-like) odor. A relatively hard butter with steep melting curve ideal for body care products. May be used in a variety of cosmetic, toiletry and pharmaceutical applications to reduce cutaneous dryness and improve skin elasticity while imparting a natural color and cocoa odor, desirable in many of today's natural formulations. General Cocoa Butter information

Cocoa Butter has been use in natural, high quality cosmetics for centuries. Cocoa Butter is particularly praised for its antioxidant properties. These properties are due to the tocopherols as well as certain polyphenol. The polyphenol CMP has been found to suppress active oxygen, a factor in cancer. CMP was also found to inhibit the production of an immuno globulin that exacerbates topical dermatitis. Therefore, it retains all its natural healing and preventative properties. In addition, it has a lovely chocolate scent that will carry through in your creams and lotions.

Cocoa Butter is the natural fat extracted from the cacao bean.

The most desirable quality of Cocoa Butter is its stability as a fat-containing natural antioxidants that also preserve it well. Our Pure Cocoa Butter has a melting point just below average body temperature, which is what causes chocolate to remain solid at room temperature but melt in the mouth.

Cocoa Butter is also used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. In the pharmaceutical industry, Cocoa Butter is used in the making of suppositories and oral medications in capsule form. It has the ability to retain a molded shape while containing commonly used medicinal chemicals without unstable reactions.

Benefits and Uses of Cocoa Butter

Cocoa Butter is often found as an additive to cosmetics, shampoos and soaps, but it is also a natural emollient making it ideal for lotions, creams and lip balms. The moisturizing abilities of Cocoa Butter are frequently recommended for prevention of stretch marks in pregnant women, treatment of chapped skin and lips, and as a daily moisturizer to prevent dry, itchy skin. The fact that is a natural preservative and has a faintly pleasant aroma further lends benefits to its cosmetic uses.

Though many believe that Cocoa Butter has the ability to reduce or diminish the appearance of scars, this is a theory that is yet unproven. It does, however, promote elasticity in the skin and will aid in the healing of chapped skin if it is used regularly. Cocoa Butter is often mistakenly used by people to expedite a suntan and while it will enhance a natural tan, it does not have a sun protection factor (SPF). To prevent the harmful effects of the sun, use a suntan lotion with an SPF of at least 15 that contains cocoa butter.

A trifle firmer at room temperature than our Shea Butter, we recommend melting and adding a bit of your favorite carrier oil to soften. Blend with a few drops of mandarin and Neroli for an absolutely wonderful "Belly Balm" for the mother to be or use it to help add body and thicken any balm, salve or cream.

It has a melting point of around 34 to 38 degrees Celsius (93 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit), rendering chocolate a solid at room temperature that readily melts once inside the mouth. It's melting points is just below body temperature, and it does change from a solid to a liquid quickly (ie. sharp melting point).

Our Cocoa Butter is a pure, crushed butter obtained from the cacao bean. It has a beautiful, rich aroma of dark chocolate. . Cocoa Butter is a soothing emollient that has been used for centuries in Africa for skin care. It has been traditionally used to heal and moisturize skin that has been exposed to the elements. FAQ

What is cocoa butter?

Cocoa butter, also known as theobroma oil, is a natural edible fat derived from the cocoa bean, the seed of the cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao). It plays a vital role in the manufacture of chocolate, giving it its smooth texture, rich flavor, and melt-in-your-mouth quality.

Cocoa butter has a creamy yellow appearance and a characteristic chocolate scent. Due to its stable fat composition, it has a relatively high melting point, close to human body temperature, which is why chocolate melts in the mouth.

Beyond chocolate production, cocoa butter is also extensively used in the cosmetic industry. It is known for its moisturizing properties and is a common ingredient in skincare products like lotions, creams, lip balms, and soaps. The natural antioxidants found in cocoa butter give it a longer shelf life and also contribute to its skin-healing properties.

Its moisturizing benefits, coupled with its pleasant aroma, make it a preferred choice for many skin and hair care products. Additionally, it has been claimed to reduce the appearance of stretch marks, although scientific evidence on this particular benefit is inconclusive.

Where does cocoa butter come from?

Origin of Cocoa Butter

The Cocoa Tree

Cocoa butter is derived from the cocoa bean, which is the seed of the Theobroma cacao tree. The cocoa tree is native to the deep tropical regions of Central and South America.

Extraction Process

After harvesting the cocoa pods from the cocoa tree, the beans are taken out and fermented for several days. They are then dried, roasted, and pressed. Through the pressing process, the fat (cocoa butter) is separated from the cocoa solids, resulting in pure cocoa butter.

Edibility of Cocoa Butter

Natural Origin

Cocoa butter is a natural fat extracted from the cocoa bean, which is harvested from the Theobroma cacao tree.

Please note, Soapgoods does not sell items for use in food. Our products are for external use only.

Culinary Uses

Yes, cocoa butter is edible and is a key ingredient in chocolate-making. It provides the creamy, melt-in-your-mouth texture of chocolate. Apart from chocolates, it's also used in various baking and cooking recipes, as well as in confectionery items, due to its rich flavor and smooth texture.

Considerations

While cocoa butter is edible, it's essential to ensure you're consuming food-grade cocoa butter and not products meant for cosmetic use. Food-grade cocoa butter is processed to be safe for consumption, while cosmetic-grade cocoa butter might contain additives not meant to be ingested.

How is cocoa butter made?

Harvesting the Cocoa Pods

The production of cocoa butter begins with the harvesting of cocoa pods. These large, colorful fruits are handpicked from the Theobroma cacao tree when they are ripe.

Fermentation

Once harvested, the cocoa beans are removed from the pods and placed in shallow containers, like baskets or wooden boxes, to ferment. Fermentation is a crucial step as it helps in developing the beans' flavor profile.

Drying

After fermentation, the cocoa beans are spread out under the sun to dry. This process reduces the moisture content, preparing them for the next stages of production.

Roasting

The dried cocoa beans are roasted at a chocolate factory. Roasting helps in bringing out the deep chocolate flavor and also aids in separating the outer shell from the inner nib.

Separation of Nibs and Shells

Once roasted, the beans are cracked open, and the nibs (the edible part of the bean) are separated from the outer shell.

Pressing the Nibs

The separated nibs are then ground down to form a liquid known as chocolate liquor or cocoa mass. When this liquor is pressed under high pressure, it splits into two components: cocoa solids (which can be processed further to make cocoa powder) and cocoa butter.

Refinement

The extracted cocoa butter may undergo further refinement, depending on its intended use, to remove any impurities or to modify its texture and aroma.

While cocoa butter might be comedogenic, it still offers numerous skincare benefits, including deep moisturization and antioxidant properties. It's about finding the right balance and understanding your skin's needs.

Can cocoa butter help with scars and stretch marks?

Cocoa Butter for Scars and Stretch Marks

Healing Properties of Cocoa Butter

Cocoa butter is rich in natural plant compounds called phytochemicals. These substances can improve blood flow to the skin and slow skin aging by protecting against damage from the sun's UV rays. Moreover, they help to smooth scars, wrinkles, and marks on the skin.

While cocoa butter possesses moisturizing and nourishing properties that can improve skin elasticity and tone, there's limited scientific evidence to conclusively prove its effectiveness in scar reduction. However, many people report seeing improvement in the appearance of scars after consistent use.

Impact on Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are tears in the skin caused by rapid growth or stretching, often related to pregnancy, weight gain, or growth spurts during puberty. Cocoa butter is a popular remedy for stretch marks. Its deeply moisturizing properties help to hydrate the skin, making stretch marks less apparent. However, as with scars, empirical evidence regarding its effectiveness is limited, but anecdotal evidence suggests potential benefits.

Usage Recommendations

For the best results, it's recommended to apply cocoa butter daily to affected areas. Massaging the butter onto the skin can also help improve circulation, potentially aiding in scar and stretch mark reduction.

Application Methods

To use cocoa butter for hair, it can be melted down and mixed with other oils or ingredients to form a hair mask. Alternatively, it's also found in many commercial hair products such as conditioners, hair balms, and hair treatments. Due to its thick consistency, it's best applied to damp hair and left on for a period, either as an overnight treatment or washed out after a few hours.

Precautions

While cocoa butter offers many benefits for hair, it's essential to note that due to its richness, it might weigh down fine hair types. It's advisable to start with a small amount and adjust as needed.

Does cocoa butter contain caffeine?

Cocoa Butter's Composition

Cocoa butter is the fat extracted from cocoa beans. While cocoa beans do contain caffeine, the amount present in the cocoa butter itself is negligible to none. Shelf Life

When stored correctly, cocoa butter can have a shelf life of up to 2 to 5 years. However, always check for any changes in texture, color, or smell as these could indicate that the butter is no longer good to use.

This product is amazing! It has a strong chocolate smell and the small discs make it easier to measure. No more wasted product or messy cleanup. The discs melted easily and evenly for my body butter recipe. The scent is great if you don't mind the smell of chocolate, but if you want to use a fragrance oil, I would suggest purchasing refined. I will definitely purchase a larger size next time.
I am in love with these little cocoa butter disks!, the smell is intoxicating, and they are super easy to use and measure. I have bought this butter 3 times and will be ordering much more!
I like the natural fragrance of vanilla and chocolate the cocoa butter gives off. So its nice for people who cant use fragrance lotions. I like to add peppermint oil for a mint chocolate scent.

I was a bit disappointed to see that the organic cocoa butter wafers are no longer available, but did want to say how much I loved having them within driving distance and how much of a valuable addition they are to my products. Any chance those will be returned to stock? Hint. Hint.
You can use this butter in your shea butter mixes to add more moisturizing qualities of your butters and body lotions...We all know how well cocoa butter works to prevent or remove stretch marks before and after pregnacy. The only thing I can complain about this product is that it doesn't come in cream form...You have to melt it down in order to have a smooth consistency. Nevertheless, Love it!
I love cocoa butter. It was one of the most moisturizing butters around.
I love the discs the Cocoa Butter comes in. It makes it so easy to use! I also really enjoy the texture and the scent in my lip balms. Thank you for an excellent product!
This is a great product! The thin pieces are easy to work with and there's nothing better than the scent of cocoa butter.

I love this butter...It makes my skin feel like silk...I use it to remove make-up, to seal the ends of my hair, a skin moisterizer and looking to find more uses for this product...I also mixed this with my Aloe butter and the two together packs a powerful punch...A little goes a long way...Again, I love this product and will be buying this again...But this time I will purchase more that 1 pound...Can't get enough!
I have never used cocoa butter before purchasing this, but I have to say I was not impressed. I assumed there would be a bit of a chocolate-y smell, but this was SO overpowering, I couldn't even scent it. In my opinion it was sickeningly sweet. Also, after melted, it took HOURS to harden. Really weird. This is not Soapgoods' fault, I guess I just don't care for cocoa butter at all, and won't be using it in my products.
I love this cocoa butter. The waffles were easy and the smellhad me craving chocolate. You have a customer for life. It's also very easy touse abd scent.
Really nice to add to any body products, I cant do with out this product is amazing. It smells really good on its one but hard to sent over unless its a food comfort smell.
I love cocoa butter and when I saw the opportunity to buy in bulk, I jumped. I've used natural cocoa butter for years, just as it is. All I did was melt a little of it down and smooth it on my skin. It keeps my skin so soft and moisturized that I never use anything else. I will definitely keep buying my butters from this site now that I know that different types are sold here. Thank you Soapgoods, you are the best.
Thank you so much for such an awesome product at such a great price! I haven't found a better price for such quality product anywhere else!! It has worked so well in my healing salve:) Thanks again soapgoods!
The Cocoa butter packs the most intoxicating chocolate smell ever. This is the perfect complement to my homemade vanilla body creams. I will be repurchasing!
This Cocoa Butter smells so nice, just like Chocolate. It melts nicely also. I have repurchased.
I purchased this cocoa butter and it is awsome! It smells so good and added just the right touch to my cream lotion :-) Soap goods site is soooo informational too! I look forward to my next purchase order.
Yum! This butter smells sooo good, melts very nicely, and is a beautiful natural color. I just made the best hand lotion with this product -- next up, lip balm!
I love this cocoa butter. It is so fragrant and is a wonderful addition to my soapmaking needs.
