Also called Adeps Lanae, wool wax, wool fat, anhydrous wool fat or wool grease, is a greasy yellow substance secreted by the sebaceous glands of wool-bearing animals. Most lanolin used by humans comes from domestic sheep.

Chemically akin to wax, it can be used as a skin ointment or water-proofing wax, and is sometimes used in products such as chap stick and shoe polish.Lanolin is used as a cream to soothe skin, as it is hypoallergenic and bacteriostatic. In this form it is used by some breastfeeding mothers on sore and cracked nipples.

Lanolin can also be used to treat chapped lips, diaper rash, dry skin, itchy skin, calluses, minor incisions, minor burns and abrasions. Many varieties of shaving cream contain lanolin.

As an ointment base, it is readily absorbed through skin, facilitating absorption of the medicinal chemicals it carries. Some folk medicine traditions use lanolin in the nose, in small amounts, to treat head colds.

Lanolin, often referred to as "wool wax," is a naturally-derived substance that has been hailed for centuries for its remarkable moisturizing properties. Obtained from the wool of sheep, lanolin is an intricate mixture of cholesterol, esters, and fatty acids. Its affinity to the skin and multifaceted benefits have made it a mainstay in a variety of cosmetic and personal care products.

Understanding Lanolin

Lanolin is a yellowish, waxy substance extracted from freshly sheared wool. It serves a vital function for sheep, providing protection against harsh environmental elements, and simultaneously maintaining the hydration of their skin. Once the wool is sheared, the lanolin is separated, purified, and then utilized in numerous applications for human use.

The Distinctive Benefits of Lanolin

Lanolin's popularity in skincare and cosmetics is rooted in its myriad advantages:

  • Powerful Moisturizer: Lanolin's molecular structure closely resembles human skin lipids, allowing it to lock in moisture and aid in preventing skin dehydration.
  • Barrier Formation: Lanolin forms a breathable film on the skin's surface, shielding it from environmental pollutants and irritants without clogging pores.
  • Softening Ability: Being a natural emollient, it has the capacity to soften and smoothen the skin, making it a preferred ingredient in creams and lotions.
  • Natural Origin: As a substance that's extracted from a renewable source, lanolin aligns well with the growing demand for natural and sustainable ingredients in personal care formulations.

Lanolin in Soap Making

The soap-making process has embraced lanolin due to the specific qualities it imparts:

  • Enhanced Lather: Lanolin can boost the creaminess and richness of soap lathers, ensuring a luxurious cleansing experience.
  • Skin Conditioning: Lanolin-infused soaps tend to leave the skin feeling supple and moisturized, countering the sometimes drying effect of certain soap bases.

Lanolin in Cosmetics

The multifunctionality of lanolin has been recognized and harnessed in the cosmetics sector in various ways:

  • Lip Care: From lipsticks to balms, lanolin is a cherished ingredient due to its hydrating properties, ensuring lips stay soft and plump.
  • Foundations & Primers: Lanolin ensures a smooth application and can enhance the staying power of makeup, making it a valuable constituent in foundations and primers.
  • Creams & Lotions: Given its remarkable moisturizing capabilities, lanolin is frequently integrated into facial and body creams, ensuring skin hydration and softness.
  • Mascara: In certain mascara formulations, lanolin serves as a conditioning agent, ensuring lashes remain supple and less prone to breakage.

Addressing Misconceptions

While lanolin is revered for its benefits, there have been misconceptions regarding its safety, primarily stemming from impurities that might be present in non-purified grades. Modern purification techniques have largely mitigated these concerns. However, as with any ingredient, patch testing is always recommended to ensure no allergic reactions, especially for individuals with sensitive skin.

I have been using Lanolin for dry, chapped or cracked skin (lips, hands, knees, elbows, heels) over 35 years. It is so nice to have this available online after the local pharmacy stopped carrying it. I mix it with varying amounts of water to achieve the desired consistency. Essential oils can be added to change the fragrance.
I ordered this product expecting to get minimal results. But to my surprise I received an overall SUPERB outcome! I made a hair butter for ethnic hair with this product. I also used a fragrance oil I ordered from this website in my formulation. They both mixed very well together, and I noticed the longer my hair butter sat, the better these two products where able to meld together. It resulted in a sweet smelling product, shiny and moisturized hair - that lasts for weeks! It's also very economical, my customers raved about how they only needed to use a small amount to get such beautiful results. As you can see I love this item, and I will be ordering more really really soon! Thanks Soapgoods for such a wonderful company! P.S And did I mention-shipping was really fast, and the packaging was excellent!
